Privileges of Category А1 Licensed Personnel

A Category A Aircraft Maintenance Licence (AML) permits the holder to issue Certificates of Release to Service (CRS) following minor scheduled line maintenance and simple defect rectification within the limits of tasks specifically endorsed on the Certification Authorisation referred to in point 145.A.35 of Annex II (Part-145).

The certification privileges shall be restricted to work that the licence holder has personally performed in the maintenance organisation that issued the Certification Authorisation.

Basic Knowledge requirements

The knowledge training element is covering the subject matter for a Category A1 AML as specified in Commission Regulation (EC) 1321/2014,

Annex III (Part-66), Appendix I.

The AML Category A1 Basic Training is subdivided into the following Modules of knowledge:

Module 5. Digital Techniques Electronic Instrument Systems

Module 6. Materials and Hardware

Module 7. Maintenance Practices

Module 8. Basic Aerodynamics

Module 11A. Turbine Aeroplane Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems

Module 15. Gas Turbine Engine

Module 17. Propeller

Basic Examination requirements

The Basic Examinations are in accordance with the requirements of Commission Regulation (EC) 1321/2014, Annex III (Part-66), Appendix II.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Essay Questions are used to evaluate the students’ knowledge for the applicable Modules.

Basic Experience requirements

There are two options to obtain a Category A1 AML:

Option 1 – To complete a full Basic Training Course approved in accordance with Annex IV (Part-147).

If this option is used, the required practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft is 1 year.

Option 2 – To pass successfully Basic Examinations on the applicable Modules only.

If this option is used, the required practical maintenance experience on operating aircraft is:

– 2 years if the applicant has a previous training considered relevant by the competent authority as a Skilled Worker

– 3 years if the applicant has no previous relevant technical training

Note: The previous aircraft maintenance experience gained outside a civil aircraft maintenance environment (Air Force, Cost Guard, Police, Aircraft Manufacture) shall be accepted when such maintenance is equivalent to that required by Part-66 as established by the competent authority.

Additional experience of civil aircraft maintenance shall, however, be required to ensure adequate understanding of the civil aircraft maintenance environment.
